Mars Bar vs Milky Way – History, Nutrition Facts, Side Effects

Mars Bar

It is a candy bar produced and sold commercially by American company Mars Inc. This type of candy bar was first manufactured in 1932 in England and was advertised as being made with Cadbury’s chocolate couverture.

This company began in 1911 as Mar-O-Bar Co. and was founded by Frank C. M. of Tacoma, Washington, who produced a variety of buttercream candy in his home.

Furthermore, this company has grown to be one of the world’s largest confectionary brands with products, like – Snickers, M&Ms, Bounty, Skittles, and Twix. Another division, Wrigley, produces hard candies, gum, and chewy candies.

In recent years, it has submerged itself further into the pet food market with the adoption of NUTRO® and Royal Canin Petfoods. Interestingly, its pet food factories have the reputation of being amazingly clean.

In 2002, the company merged with Pedigree Masterfoods into Masterfoods. It had about 2000 employees and made around 3 million candy bars per day. Also, the company announced that it was trying to decrease sodium in all its products by a quarter, by 2015.

In the present day, it is one of the richest companies in the world. For example, it employs more than 75,000 people and is valued at approximately $70 billion, making it the 6th largest privately held company in the world.

Ingredients – this product contains: sugar, cocoa butter, skimmed milk powder, sunflower oil, cocoa mass, emulsifier (soya lecithin), lactose, milk fat, palm fat, whey powder (from milk), barley malt extract, fat-reduced cocoa, salt, hydrolyzed milk protein, glucose syrup, natural vanilla extract, egg white powder, and milk chocolate (contains a minimum of 14 percent milk solids).

Milky Way

It was developed in 1923 by Frank C. M. and originally produced in Minneapolis, Minnesota. It is named after malted milk, a famous drink around the time it was released.

The original candy bar featured the same ingredients it still does in the present day (like a chocolate-nougat base topped with caramel, all surrounded by milk chocolate). Outside of the United States, it is produced without the caramel.

In 1926, this brand was introduced nationally in two flavors – vanilla and chocolate, each for a nickel. The 1st advertising slogan was – “A Chocolate Malted Milk in a Candy Bar.” It was an instant success, and by 1930, it was the #1 selling candy bar worldwide.

Ingredients – this product contains – glucose syrup (from wheat), milk solids, sugar, cocoa butter, vegetable fat, barley malt extract, cocoa mass, egg white, cocoa powder, salt, emulsifier (soy lecithin), and natural flavor (vanilla extract).

Note

Outside the United States, there is a very similar bar (however, not produced with the same ingredients) – known as the Mars Bar, which replaces the traditional Milky Way in those countries. Moreover, you may see a candy bar called Milky Way when traveling outside the US, nevertheless, that version is actually the European version of the US current 3 Musketeers bar.

Verdict – Mars bar vs Milky Way – Which Is Worse For Your Health?

Both candy bars are quite similar in ingredients and should be avoided as much as possible. There are a few reasons:

Dairy

Some individuals have lactose intolerance, a condition in which the human body can’t break down lactose (the sugar in milk) properly. The signs and symptoms of lactose intolerance include abdominal cramping, nausea, diarrhea, and gas.

Dairy products also contain allergenic proteins, like – casein, that can also be problematic for many consumers. Also, consuming milk is advertised as having a protective effect on the human bones, however, the reality is quite the opposite.

For example, according to a study which tracked the physical activity and diets of adolescent girls, consumption of dairy products did not prevent stress fractures.

Sunflower Oil

This oil is very high in omega-6 fatty acids (more than 70%). The ideal ratio of omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids recommended for excellent health is 1:1. In other words, you should intake equal parts of each type of essential fats. Consuming too much omega 6 fatty acids can result in an imbalance of fatty acids in the human body, that may have dangerous effects on the overall human health.

Also, a regular diet that is high in sunflower oil increases blood sugar levels, fasting insulin, and blood fats.

Eggs

Men who consumed more than 6 eggs every seven days had a 30% higher risk of heart failure and ischemic stroke, according to a 2015 study done at the Nutritional Epidemiology Institute of Environmental Medicine, Stockholm, Sweden.

Moreover, eggs are very high in cholesterol, about 186 grams per egg, which is 63% of the daily recommended value for a healthy adult. Dietary cholesterol may contribute to nonalcoholic fatty liver disease and it is a strong predictor of liver cancer, cirrhosis, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) and type 2 diabetes mellitus.

Salmonella bacteria can be found in the intestinal tract of birds, animals, reptiles, insects, seafood, fish, and people. It can be passed to humans through the consumption of contaminated foods that have been in contact with unwashed hands, eggs, raw meat or poultry, milk, seafood, or by coming into contact with contaminated animal feces.

Salmonella in eggs may survive french toast and cooked omelets, and maybe even in eggs boiled up to 8 minutes.
