Cheez-It vs Cheese Nips – Nutrition Facts, Ingredients, Side Effects


It is a brand of crackers that was first introduced in 1921 by the Green & Green Company then located at the corners of Concord and Cincinnati streets.

Now, it is a cracker produced by the Kellog Company through its Sunshine Biscuits division. Kellogg Company is a leading manufacturer of convenience foods, including crackers, cookies, cereal bars, toaster pastries, meat alternatives, frozen waffles, ice cream cones, and pie crusts, and the world’s leading producer of cereal.


These crackers contain – vegetable oil (palm oil and soybean oil with TBHQ), enriched flour (niacin, wheat flour, vitamin B1, reduced iron, vitamin B2, and the synthetic form of vitamin B9 – folic acid), salt, cheese (made with whey protein, skim milk, salt, cheese cultures, annatto extract color, and enzymes), paprika, maltodextrin, buttermilk, whey, cheddar cheese (cheese cultures, pasteurized milk, enzymes, salt), garlic powder, buttermilk, onion powder, monosodium glutamate, yeast, tomato powder, yeast extract, spice, vanilla beans, dried yeast, corn syrup solids, artificial and natural flavors, sodium caseinate, paprika oleoresin color, disodium inosinate, autolyzed yeast extract, malic acid, disodium guanylate, annatto extract color, Monterey jack cheese (produced with cheese cultures, pasteurized milk, enzymes, and salt), sugar, natural hickory smoke flavor, yellow 5, citric acid, soy lecithin, and yellow 6.

Cheese Nips

They are small cheese-flavored crackers produced by Nabisco and were introduced in 1955.

Also, they are known for selling versions of their product which are shaped like cartoon characters, including Despicable Me, Avengers, SpongeBob SquarePants, Angry Birds, and Catdog.


These crackers contain – partially hydrogenated soybean oil, enriched flour (niacin, wheat flour, thiamine mononitrate, reduced iron, riboflavin, and the synthetic form of folate – folic acid), salt, cheddar cheese (produced from salt, cultured milk, and enzymes), leavening (yeast and baking soda), whey, monosodium glutamate (flavor enhancer), autolyzed yeast extract, reduced lactose whey, blue cheese powders (produced from salt, cultured milk, and enzymes), cheddar cheese, skim milk, sugar, citric acid, lactic acid, high fructose corn syrup, sodium caseinate, acetic acid, malted barley flour, disodium phosphate, artificial flavor, and annatto extract (vegetable color).

As you can see, these crackers have a lot of ingredients that pose various side effects on your health. Let’s examine just a few of the ingredients:


According to the American Heart Association, up to 75 percent of the sodium intake comes from processed foods, like – soup, tomato sauce, canned foods, condiments, and prepared mixes.

Excess sodium consumption increases blood pressure since sodium holds excess fluid in the human body, which creates an unnecessary burden on the heart.

According to the AHA (American Heart Association), hypertension is a noteworthy concern, especially for women, as it plays an important role in the deaths of more than 200,000 women in the US every year.

Moreover, a regular high salt diet increases the risk of stomach cancer with about 2000 new cases each year in the United States can be attributed to salt intake.

Also, there is substantial evidence that a high salt consumption in children may predispose them to the development of osteoporosis, high blood pressure, stomach cancer, asthma, and obesity.

Trans Fat

Trans fats are a form of unsaturated fat, but unlike saturated fats, they have at least one double bond in their chemical structure. Artificial trans fats are created in an industrial process which adds hydrogen to liquid vegetable oils to make them more stable.

There are also naturally-occurring trans fats that are made in the gut of some animals, and meats and dairy products contain them.

Trans fats can decrease the level of HDL cholesterol while increasing the level of LDL cholesterol. This can cause a condition called – arteriosclerosis (also known as the hardening of the arteries), which leads to heart disease, back pains, erection problems, or stroke.

You should also know that in the US if a processed food has less than 0.5 grams of this type of fat in a serving, the food label can read 0 (zero) grams trans fat.

Eating these foods leads to consuming hidden trans fat which can easily add up particularly if you intake a few servings of foods containing ”zero grams of trans fats.”

Sodium Caseinate

It is produced by mixing extracted casein (the protein that is commonly found in mammalian milk; food manufacturers usually use cow’s milk casein) with a sodium compound, like – sodium hydroxide (also known as caustic soda).

There are a few different adverse reactions which can occur after eating foods containing sodium caseinate, especially allergic reaction.

Partially Hydrogenated Soybean Oil

It is usually found in processed foods, including – cakes, cookies, crackers, and even in bread.

It may cause obesity, cancer, diabetes, asthma, decreased immune system, heart disease, reproductive problems, high blood pressure, and increased LDL and total cholesterol.

Folic Acid

Intaking this synthetic vitamin can lead to shortness of breath, allergic reactions (like – hives, skin rash, swelling of the lips), and cancer.

  1. Why are not mentioning the fact Cheez-Its contain dyes, both Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 to which many people are allergic but the Nabisco Cheese Nips do not. In addition, they have corn syrup solids as well as sugar. The ingredients you are showing for Cheese Nips is not what is on the box. I eat these and they do not have sugar in them. Your ingredient lists show they do.
