10 Essential Oils For Prostate Cancer & Enlarged Prostate

The prostate gland is located in front of the rectum and below the bladder. Because it secretes the seminal fluid which helps to transport and nourish the sperm which comes from the testicles, this gland has a fertility function.

Prostate cancer is the 2nd most common cause of all cancer-related deaths among men in the United States, according to the Urology Care Foundation. It is treatable in the early stages.

Common signs and symptoms of prostate problems include:

  • lower extremity swelling;
  • bone pain;
  • abdominal pain;
  • blood in the urine;
  • a sense of not completely emptying the bladder;
  • painful ejaculation;
  • erectile dysfunction;
  • burning during urination;
  • frequent urination;
  • a weak stream of urine.

Enlargement of the prostate is not the same as prostate cancer and happens when the cells of this gland start to multiply. Ultimately, this will squeeze the urethra and limit the flow of urine.

According to statistics, it can affect 50% of men between 51 and 60 years of age and about 80 percent of men or age 80 or more.

Here is a list of the top 10 essential oils for prostate cancer & enlarged prostate:

#1 Rosemary

1,8-Cineole, a compound in rosemary essential oil, has anti-inflammatory and anti-nociceptive attributes, according to a 2000 study.

Another study, which was published in the journal Cancer Research, shows that this oil may be effective in some types of cancer treatments as it helps reduce the spread of cancer cells.

Also, it has beneficial calming effects on the body’s stress response, including helping to lower cortisol levels, a hormone which the human body releases when it is under stress.

In addition, this oil can be used to help treat a few types of pain. For this reason, rosemary essential oil can be used topically on the affected area but diluted with a carrier oil.

#2 Myrrh

It is produced by steam distillation from the resin of the tree with the scientific name of  Commiphora myrrha, native to the Middle East and Africa. It was also used by the ancient Egyptians in their unique embalming processes.

Myrrh essential oil is a trusted natural remedy for treating dysmenorrhea, arthritis, menopausal problems, anemia, asthma, bronchitis, mouth ulcers, obesity, gum diseases, digestive problems, rheumatism, and cough.

More importantly, the results of a recent study concluded that the HS-1 and MCF-7 cancer cell lines have an increased sensitivity to the myrrh essential oil compared with the remaining cell lines.

#3 Frankincense

It has a spicy aroma and is renowned for calming the mind and elevating the mood. According to a 2009 study, frankincense essential oil had the capacity to target cancer cells in women living with late-stage ovarian cancer. Some thought that it might also be beneficial for prostate cancer patients.

Moreover, this oil was able to cause high levels of cancer cell death in pancreatic cancer cells. A similar effect took place in another study on bladder cancer cells.

#4 Ginger

This oil has plant compounds that have potent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties which may prevent cancer.

Actually, ginger essential oil not only kills cancer cells but also prevents them from becoming resilient to chemotherapy, according to scientists from the University of Michigan Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Another study issued in Complementary Therapies in Medicine established that it may be a short-term aid for knee pain in adults over 60 and older. In addition, this oil has a notable reduction in inflammation levels.

#5 Oregano

Carnosol, a phytochemical in oregano essential oil, has also been evaluated for anti-cancer property in breast, prostate, leukemia, skin, and colon cancer with good results. The researchers concluded that carnosol used signaling pathways which caused cancer cell suicide.

Also, it has anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties as well as it promotes gastrointestinal health.

#6 Thyme

It is produced from Thymus vulgaris, a perennial herb. It has hormone balancing and estrogen binding properties which make it effective against a few types of cancer proliferation.

Due to its content of camphene and caryophyllene, thyme essential oil has antiseptic properties and kills infections within the body and on the skin. Additionally, it tones up the heart, circulatory system, nervous system, digestive system, skin, and muscles.

Also, thyme essential oil showed the capacity to suppress the inflammatory cyclooxygenase-2 enzyme in a similar way as resveratrol (a potent antioxidant which is part of a group of compounds called polyphenols) does, according to a research issued in the Journal of Lipid Research.

#7 Lavender

It has anticoagulant, analgesic, antidepressant, anticonvulsant, antihistamine, anti-fungal,  anti-inflammatory, anti-infectious, antiseptic, antimicrobial, antitumor, antibacterial, sedative, and regenerative properties.

Because it increases alpha waves, the scent of lavender essential oil has a proven calming effect and can be used to reduce the feeling of anxiety and stress.

According to a 2008 study, geranium essential oil has the capacity to cause cell death in cancerous cell lines of human origin.

In addition, it is shown to trigger microglial cells, that release pro-inflammatory agents which reduce inflammation levels in neural pathways.

#9 Peppermint

It is frequently considered one of the most-loved of all the essential oils after rose and lavender. There are even references to peppermint essential oil as far back as 1,000 BC, in European herbal medicine, as well as in Japanese and Chinese medicine.
