Borderline personality disorder is a mental illness described by interpersonal relationships, pervasive instability in self-image, moods, and behavior.
BPD commonly starts during adolescence or early adulthood.
Nearly 75 percent of individuals diagnosed with this mental illness are women. Also, approximately 80% of people with BPD display suicidal behaviors.
Its causes are not yet completely understood, nevertheless, they are likely to be a combination of environmental and genetic factors.
Common signs and symptoms of the BPD include the following:
- strong feelings of worry, anxiety, and depression;
- a history of unstable relationships which can change extremely from intense love to intense hate;
- impulsive behavior;
- self-damaging behavior.
It is typically treated with psychotherapy, aided with prescription medication in some cases.

#1 Britney Spears
She has been one of the most successful solo acts in popular music. Britney suffered from an eating disorder, that shows insecurity and poor body image, both of which are strongly associated with this condition.
Also, she had problems with substance abuse.
She was an English songwriter and singer. Amy Winehouse was known for her eclectic mix of musical genres, including rhythm, soul, jazz, and blues.
Some doctors analyzed her behaviors over the course of her career and said that BPD might have been an issue for her, one that Amy attempted to self-medicate with alcohol and drugs.
#3 Marilyn Monroe
She was an American comedienne, actress, model, and singer. Marilyn Monroe became one of the world’s most enduring iconic figures and is memorialized both for her tragic professional and personal struggles within the film industry and her delightful embodiment of the Hollywood sex symbol.
What is clear is that Marilyn suffered from severe mental distress.
Her symptoms included a split or confused identity, a feeling of emptiness, unstable relationships, extreme emotional volatility, and an impulsivity which drove her to drug addiction and eventually, suicide – all characteristics of this condition.

He is an actor, renowned for Stand-Up Spotlight (1988), Paramount Comedy Theatre, Vol. 2: Decent Exposures (1987), and #BeRobin the Movie (2015).
In 1996, he became very depressed and anxious (the classic signs of BPD), known in the entertainment business as “the performer’s disease.”
She is an American filmmaker, actress, and humanitarian who received two Screen Actors Guild Awards, an Academy Award, and three Golden Globe Awards.
Before she sought mental health treatment, the actress was promiscuous, had volatile relationships, and had admitted to having thoughts of suicide frequently – all signs of BPD.
#6 Lindsey Lohan
She is an American singer and actress who has become a tabloid magnet since gaining celebrity status in 2001.
Lindsey has this mental illness which explains her numerous erratic behaviors that are regularly reported.
#7 Bobby Baker
She is a performance artist who for many years has translated her personal life experiences into outside shows.
But when she was diagnosed with this condition in 1996, followed by a breast cancer diagnosis, Bobby Baker set out to capture her journey to recovery in 711 drawings which would serve as her private catharsis.
#8 Nikki Hayes
She is a DJ on SPIN 1038 and 4FM. Nikki previously presented on RTÉ 2fm and has also DJ’ed in many clubs across Ireland.
Nikki has opened up about being diagnosed with this mental problem, and in an interview, she said – “I was 15 and I had an eating disorder, it was really a diet that went out of control. Then I had a suicide attempt, there was lots of self-harm.”
#9 Darrell Hammond
He is an American stand-up comedian, actor, and impressionist as well as he was a regular cast member on Saturday Night Live.
Darrell has been speaking about his problems publicly, an experience he said has been something like cathartic.
Scott Levy is an American podcaster and professional wrestler-actor better known by his ring name – Raven.
He once said – “Because I have a narcissistic personality disorder, I have a histrionic personality disorder, I have BPD, I’ve been diagnosed, I have a lot of emotional, mental issues. It stems from me not being abused as a child, but being neglected as a child. That was just as bad, if not worse than abuse.”
Vickie Lynn Hogan, better known as Anna Nicole Smith, was an American actress, model, and television personality. She had this condition which explains the high-drama in her life, in addition to some of the drugs she took.
#12 Brandon Marshall
He is America’s toughest defensive football wide receiver and was diagnosed with BPD. His symptoms include – magnified fear of abandonment, an inability to process emotions, and heightened feelings of boredom and loneliness.
#13 Jeffrey Dahmer
He was a convicted sex offender and serial killer (murdered 17 males between 1978 and 1991). He was diagnosed with this condition, however, he was sane enough to stand trial.
He was a German politician who was the Führer of Nazi Germany from 1934 to 1945. He has also been posthumously diagnosed with this mental illness by numerous psychiatrists and histopsychologists.
#15 Winona Ryder
She is one of the most successful and iconic actresses of the 1990s. Many believe that she had this condition due to her past actions.
New Additions To The List
He is an American actor and comedian. Pete is famous for his participation in Season 40 of Saturday Night Live. He revealed in a new interview that he was diagnosed with the condition after entering a rehabilitation program in December 2016.
Princess Di was the wife of Charles, Prince of Wales, and the mother of Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex and Prince William, Duke of Cambridge. It is thought that she had BPD due to her parents’ divorce, which left Princess Diana with deep feelings of unworthiness.
